Investment Management and Financial Advise from St. James’s Place

St. James’s Place plc was previously known as St. James’s Place’s Capital plc. With head offices in Cirencester and Gloucestershire, it is one of the oldest UK financial advice companies with more than twenty offices in the United Kingdom.

At present, St. James’s Place has a customer base consisting of more thousands of clients in the UK and Overseas. Various sources suggest that they are responsible for managing assets (Insurance, Investments and Pensions) worth £150 billion.

Why is St. James's Place’s making headlines?

We all are aware of the fact that St. James’s Place recently became a hot topic for discussion. Well, this is because a lot of their existing clients are complaining about St James’s Place:

  • Lack of investing selection (tied agent)
  • Lack of ongoing advice services (paying fees for service they haven’t received)
  • High exit fees (starting from 5% penalty to change provider)
  • Undisclosed annual charges
  • Intricate, complex and sometimes misleading fees structure

As a result, investors are complaining to St James’ Place (SJP) and asking for their money back in order to compensate for the incurred losses.

What are SJP doing?

Having carried out an internal review, St. James’s Place has decided to control this situation by allocating more than £400 million to compensate their clients. However, it is believed that this is purely to compensate clients for annual fees where there is no evidence the SJP adviser carried out a review.

Whilst this may be sufficient to compensate a considerable percentage of their clients – it will not take into account what are potentially much larger losses that clients may have suffered.

Why is refunding their fees not enough?

Loss of Earnings – For people who have transferred into SJP from existing schemes such as Workplace Pensions or Personal Private Pensions, it is often not enough to refund the fees they have paid as if the advice to move to SJP was an unnecessary step designed to make money for the SJP Adviser without any tangible benefit to to the client, it is not enough to simply refund the fees. The client, pension saver or investor should be returned to the same financial position that they would have been in had the pension transfer never taken place.

These compounded losses can be much higher due to compound interest.

Liabilities – We have seen cases where clients have been advised into tax wrappers such as Bonds and Trusts which were wholly unsuitable for the client’s circumstances and as a result, they have suffered tax liabilities when trying to get access to their money.

Some would argue that by reviewing and paying redress to their clients themselves, rather than being a gesture of goodwill, SJP could in fact be looking to placate their clients and deter the from making much larger claims for financial redress.

It’s almost like having the person who committed the crime determining their sentence.

It’s worth noting that SJP are not the only financial adviser guilty of overcharging, lack of servicing or investment choice, the primary reason they have been appearing in headlines is simply because they are the largest and most successful and as such have the most affected clients.

Mr. Henry Johnson

A number of years ago, I was advised to transfer approx. £150,000 of old workplaces and my SERPS pension in St. James’s Place.
At the time I thought my investment was performing well. I had no issues, as I was satisfied with the results. However, when I came across the news headlines, I found out that St. James’s Place had decided to compensate its clients for all the unjustified fees and charges taken. I doubted whether or not I qualified for a claim, so I looked online and found HT Legal Claims.

The team at HT Legal Claims are very friendly, and really experienced in financial services. The man I dealt with had even worked at St James’s Place.

They asked me to provide some necessary information regarding my pension. They then went away and looked into the details without charging me any fees. Whilst having this question-answer round, it became clear that I had never received any ongoing advice but was continuously paying for it. My SJP financial adviser had not had a conversation with me since I had invested neither on a phone call nor face-to-face, all I got was an annual review letter signifying my investment’s performance. It became clear I was eligible to get my fees refunded.

SJP were quick to offer me a settlement of my fees however HT Legal Claims made it clear to me that I was entitled to more. They had contacted my previous pension providers and had calculated how much more money I would have had in my pensions had I just left them where the were. The amount was much higher than I could have predicted and almost double what I had been offered by SJP!

They took the claim back to SJP and initiated my claim settlement process without causing any disturbance to my daily routine.

Once SJP accepted the settlement it was paid back into my pension via HT Legal within days.

HT Legal took a fee or 30% + VAT for the work they had carried out for me, which was more than covered by the increased settlement they got for me.

I am really grateful to the team of HT Legal Claims. Thanks to their dedication and hard work, I was able to reclaim the true financial redress I was due.
